Not only are smoothies delicious, they can also be full of vitamins and minerals that help to promote a healthy body. At this time of year many of us are trying to live a little healthier after the excesses of Christmas and New Year celebrations and smoothies can be a good way to help ensure you are getting plenty of nutrients.
Part of the reason they are better for you than fruit juices is that they contain the whole food, unlike juices which leave the fibre behind. This results in a tasty drink that contains quite a lot of sugar. That’s not to say you shouldn’t ever have fruit juice, but just be aware of the sugar content so you can make an informed choice.
Perfect as a replacement for breakfast or as a snack, smoothies are full of fibre which helps keep you feeling fuller as well as aiding your digestive system. Try and choose ones that blend a variety of fruits, vegetables, and seeds/nuts to avoid overloading on sugar that could leave you feeling tired instead of energised.
They are also perfect on the go, sitting down to a full breakfast can be difficult for some people who want a quick and easy option that they can grab as they run out of the door in the morning.
Try and use lower sugar fruits such as berries, alongside green vegetables. You can even add protein powders to provide a well rounded meal or avocado or nuts / nut milks.
Smoothies on the Go
Many deli’s and cafes are now offering Smoothies as eat-in or takeaway options which are perfect if you don’t have the time or inclination to make them yourself. Just try to ensure when you buy smoothies that you are getting fresh, high quality ingredients without added sugars.
Many establishments will make your smoothie while you wait, so you can see exactly what goes into it. Some gyms and health clubs are also offering them in their café’s. They can be great as a post workout snack, but again try and choose options that have a good source of protein included too. Otherwise you could find yourself reaching for the biscuit tin or vending machine!
