Summer ice cream favourites

ice cream in summer flavours

As summer is arriving in the UK and we’re starting to enjoy more hot sunny days, deliciously cold ice creams are starting to enter our thoughts. While ice cream can be enjoyed at any time of year, it is especially heavenly in the hot weather. Here are some of our summer ice cream favourites.

With so many different flavours of ice cream available, it can be almost impossible to narrow them down to a few favourites. And the basics always remain popular – you can’t go wrong with vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream. Why stop there though when there are so many other flavours to explore?

While we tend to focus on more creamy and comforting flavours such as chocolate and caramel in winter, in summer we tend to look for lighter and more refreshing choices. Citrus flavours such as orange and lemon are always a good choice in summer, with their slight hint of tang giving them a freshness that appeals when we feel hot and thirsty.

Adding a bit of zing to an ordinary ice cream flavour can transform it into something that tastes more of summer. So mint chocolate is becomes a more refreshing choice than plain chocolate. Or vanilla that has a swirl of raspberry or lemon added to it is that much more delicious in hot weather.

Fruits that we associate with summer also make good flavours for the hot weather. Tropical flavours like watermelon, banana and mango (or even a mixture of them all) become more popular in the summer.

Different ways of serving ice cream

Our preferences for how our ice cream is served to us also changes during the summertime. In the winter we prefer a comforting bowl of ice cream, but in the hot weather an ice cream cone allows us to make our ice cream portable and take it outside with us. This means we can eat the ice cream where we need it – out in the sunshine when we’re hot – and eat the cone at the same time which saves us worrying about what to do with the container. What a genius idea!

Of course toppings are another way we can make everyday ice creams into summer favourites. Toppings are no longer limited to flavoured syrups. You can now get fruity toppings, nuts, sprinkles and chocolate that hardens when it comes into contact with the cold ice cream. And of course many of us still love to pop that 99 flake or a wafer into our ice cream cone too.

When you consider the hundreds of different flavours, the variety of ways to serve an ice cream (even just the cones come in a wide range of shapes and sizes) and the unlimited types of toppings you can add, ice cream must be not only one of the most mouthwatering desserts available but also the most versatile!
