A ripple cup is a simple take-away cup which can be filled with hot or cold liquid, and then sealed with a lid. The most familiar take-away cups are those which require a paper sleeve in order to prevent heat from burning the customer’s hand, but these have gone out of fashion due to the ripple cup. Rather than using an accessory to keep the heat in, the cup uses a ripple fold in an external layer of the paper cup. In the same ways that ripple cups allow customers to keep their hands cool, and avoid contact with the hot surface of the cup, the ripple effect also prevents heat loss from the surface of the cup. In most paper cups, heat passes quickly from the liquid to the surface of the cup, and from there into the atmosphere. Heat is rapidly lost in this manner.
